WARNING: This review may contain spoilers.

First things first. The Midnight Sea is the first (ever) book of Kat Ross that I’ve read. The book sat on my shelf for about a year already and I haven’t decided on reading it until February 2018.

From the first few pages of the book, it captured my attention already. Honestly, I’ve had hesitation before reading the book but my patience to read a little longer got the best of me and I did not regret it! The magical and unique world of Nazafareen had pulled me deeper into the book until the end. The book has potential. The characters, specifically, Nazafareen has a great impact on me. In my own perspective, her character is strong enough to be the main character of The Midnight Sea. Darius, on the other hand, is also a likable character.

Moreover, the supporting characters have their own distinctive personalities which I found great. The writing style is also simple in which the emotions of the characters are exemplified well. I am glad that the author focuses on the growth of the main characters rather than their thrilling romance. I am sure a lot of readers will love The Midnight Sea because it is a mix of action, thrilling and irresistible romance, enthralling plot, and fascinating characters.

What I did not like from this book is that, at some point, I got lost a bit because I cannot memorize the names of some characters and places right away so I had to back read a couple of times.

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed and liked the book. I don’t have high expectations about the book but I am glad that the story has surprised me in every way possible. I am hoping to love the second book too which is entitled, Blood of the Prophet.

“Perhaps it was because underneath that thirst for vengeance, I was afraid. Terribly afraid. Monsters were real, and the grown-ups had failed to save us from them.”

“The world is in an eternal struggle against good and evil.”

“It is not the barbarians, nor even the Druj, that we must fear the most, Nazafareen. It is the enemy within.”

“All that mattered was this moment, and the confrontation that lay ahead.”

“Unfailingly decent to his friends, implacable to his enemies.”

Nazafareen lives for revenge. A girl of the isolated Four-Legs Clan, all she knows about the King’s elite Water Dogs is that they leash wicked creatures called daevas to protect the empire from the Undead. But when scouts arrive to recruit young people with the gift, she leaps at the chance to join their ranks. To hunt the monsters that killed her sister.

Scarred by grief, she’s willing to pay any price, even if it requires linking with a daeva named Darius. Human in body, he’s possessed of a terrifying power, one that Nazafareen controls. But the golden cuffs that join them have an unwanted side effect. Each experiences the other’s emotions, and human and daeva start to grow dangerously close.

As they pursue a deadly foe across the arid waste of the Great Salt Plain to the glittering capital of Persepolae, unearthing the secrets of Darius’s past along the way, Nazafareen is forced to question his slavery—and her own loyalty to the empire. But with an ancient evil stirring in the north, and a young conqueror sweeping in from the west, the fate of an entire civilization may be at stake…
