Yesterday, I went to the only bookstore we have in town and I was one of those lucky buyers to attain 20-80% sale! At first, I felt anxious because I had to choose between A Very Large Expanse of Sea and Legendary. I chose Legendary even though it was more expensive (I thought it wasn’t included on their sale) because I recently finished reading Caraval (the review is on the way)  and it made me want to read the next book! — The struggle of reading a series. Haha.

Upon making my payment, the cashier told me that the Legendary was included on their 80% sale and that made me run back to the nearest shelf to get the A Very Large Expanse of Sea which was also included on their 20% sale. Ahhh, the joy of sale! Hahaha. And guess what? These two books were the last copy on that bookstore and I want to think that they were meant for me! Haha. Well, it’s my birth month anyway so advance happy birthday to me! 🙂

A Very Large Expanse of Sea by Tahereh Mafi

It’s 2002, a year after 9/11. It’s an extremely turbulent time politically, but especially so for someone like Shirin, a sixteen-year-old Muslim girl who’s tired of being stereotyped.

Shirin is never surprised by how horrible people can be. She’s tired of the rude stares, the degrading comments—even the physical violence—she endures as a result of her race, her religion, and the hijab she wears every day. So she’s built up protective walls and refuses to let anyone close enough to hurt her. Instead, she drowns her frustrations in music and spends her afternoons break-dancing with her brother.

But then she meets Ocean James. He’s the first person in forever who really seems to want to get to know Shirin. It terrifies her—they seem to come from two irreconcilable worlds—and Shirin has had her guard up for so long that she’s not sure she’ll ever be able to let it down.

A heart to protect. A debt to repay. A game to win.

After being swept up in the magical world of Caraval, Donatella Dragna has finally escaped her father and saved her sister, Scarlett, from a disastrous arranged marriage. The girls should be celebrating, but Tella isn’t yet free. She made a desperate bargain with a mysterious criminal, and what Tella owes him no one has ever been able to deliver: Caraval Master Legend’s true name.

The only chance of uncovering Legend’s identity is to win Caraval, so Tella throws herself into the legendary competition once more—and into the path of the murderous heir to the throne, a doomed love story, and a web of secrets…including her sister’s. Caraval has always demanded bravery, cunning, and sacrifice, but now the game is asking for more. If Tella can’t fulfill her bargain and deliver Legend’s name, she’ll lose everything she cares about—maybe even her life. But if she wins, Legend and Caraval will be destroyed forever…

Welcome, welcome to Caraval . . . the games have only just begun.
