SYNOPSIS

Edwin Green’s ex-girlfriend is famous. We’re talking cover-of-every-tabloid-in-the-grocery-store-line famous. She dumped Edwin one year ago on what he refers to as Black Saturday, and in hopes of winning her back, he’s spent the last twelve months trying to become famous himself. It hasn’t gone well.

But when a history class assignment pairs Edwin with Parker Haddaway, the mysterious new girl at school, she introduces him to Garland Lenox, a nursing-home-bound World War II veteran who will change Edwin’s life forever.

The three escape to France, in search of the old man’s long-lost love, and as word of their adventure spreads, they become media darlings. But when things fall apart, they also become the focus of French authorities. In a race against time, who will find love, and who will only find more heartache?GOODREADS

REVIEW

What I Like:

First things first. The synopsis is interesting and throughout the book, it’s more than that! I love how every chapter has a subtitle of what will happen in that chapter, like a prediction. Honestly, it is kind of hard to put down because of the funny conversations between the characters– Edwin, Parker, and Garland. The overall plot of the book is humorous, unique, and impressive! It is also well-written except for some French words and/or sentences that I couldn’t understand. Gibbs thoroughly exemplifies the characters well with their distinctive personalities although it is somewhat common– nerd, mysterious transferee, and such. But overall, they are fun and interesting to read!

Another thing that I like about this book is, it is not slow-paced or fast-paced. It is like ‘in between pace’ but you wouldn’t even notice it once you finally grab on to the stories of Garland and their adventures in France. I love how the author put stories from World War II, well that is obvious because Garland is a WWII veteran, but what made me love it more is because it somehow reminded me of our country’s history– the Bataan Death March and Pearl Harbor.

Moreover, this book is so refreshing to read! I can somehow relate to some of Edwin’s musings like,

“I hated to disappoint people, especially to their face, so I couldn’t say no again.”

“You can’t imagine what it’s like for people to constantly want to talk about the one thing in your life you don’t want to talk about.”

And I’m amused to Garland’s words of wisdom like,

“You might get one chance like that in your life, son, and you damn well better be ready to take it or it’ll haunt you forever.”

“The thing is, when you meet the one, the one you’ve dreamed about and hoped and prayed actually existed somewhere out there in the world, when you meet her, you know it. You know it in an instant.”

Edwin, Parker, and Garland are what I can honestly say, the characters you can’t help but love throughout the book. Related image

Lastly, I can’t say anything about the ending because I don’t want to spoil it. Either way, it’s all worth it– for me, at least.

What I Did Not Like:

The only thing that I did not like from the book is that it doesn’t have any translations of the French words. I think it should have some translations placed on the last pages of the book. Other than that, I totally love this book and it doesn’t affect my rating towards it.

Overall:

Overall, I fell in love with this book! I love everything about it– from the book cover, writing style, adventures, and all. The writing is really good that I often forget (while reading) that this is Gibbs’ debut novel. I can say that I’ll watch out for more of his books in the future! 🙂

Recommend or not?

Highly recommended if you’re looking for a Young Adult book with the adventure of taking you from Alabama to France.
